Susan Luvini-Ferrari was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 17 November 1954, in a Jewish family of Russian descent. Encouraged by her father, at a young age Susan attended Lionel Abrams studio, a prominent South African artist.
In 1975 she graduated in Fine Arts at the Unversity of the Witwatersrand. Following her first marriage, Susan emigrated to Lugano Switzerland in 1980. Here she found new inspiration. Her subject matter remained very colourful, but became more figurative.
Her new art works were exhibited in her 1st collective exhibition at Ca Mornee Pura. Art critic Vittorio Castiglioni praised them highly: “The excellent impression aroused by Susan Luvini-Ferrari was greatly admired & appreciated. Drawings carried out with the confidence, accompanied by hints of both volume & light. In her paintings vibrant colors predominate. An intense & expressive collection of artworks. Tones & hues that appear to spring off the canvases with the candor of the Primitives.”
Having suffered crucial setbacks, almost total deafness & life-changing emotional upheavals, there has been a conspicuous metamorphosis in her choice of subject matter. Availing heself of art to vehicle a more universal voice for the horrors of genocide & wars, Susan has not neglected the diametrically opposed world of beauty. Canvases dedicated to exceptionally beguiling human figures & animals.
Surfacing from the valley of despair, compassion & vulnerability, her delicate brushtrokes & engaging, even disturbing, portraits are intrinsically woven in a style that doesn’t want to be ascribed to any particular trend or school other than her very own. Maestro Nando Snozzi has been Susan’s mentor for the past 6 years. In his Atelier, surrounded by mountains and in the company of other women artists, Susan found a renewed source of inspiration.
